Welcome to the website of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Dermatology and STDs (NCHADS), a national center of the Ministry of Health, devoted to prevention and care of HIV/AIDS, STDs in Cambodia.

In the past decade, Cambodia has been experiencing the most devastated HIV/AIDS epidemic in South-East Asia. With full support from the top policy makers, good leadership in program management and impressive commitment of our public health program officer, HIV/AIDS prevention and care program in Cambodia has been very successful given its resource constraints. Available data from surveillance program and other research in Cambodia indicated the downward trend of HIV prevalence and incidence among high risk groups, increase in condom use among commercial sex workers and their client and declining trend of sexually transmitted diseases. Even though these findings reflect the success of prevention programs to prevent transmission, the rate of occurrence of new HIV infections is still high in the high-risk populations and transmission among general population still continues. Cambodia, therefore, needs to increase her effort to reduce the occurrence of new transmission. At the same time, Cambodia is preparing its health infrastructures and human resources to cope with the increasingly large number of AIDS patients through continuum of care development at the operational district level. The availability of antiretroviral drugs will escalate medical care costs, health worker training, and the development of a treatment infrastructure.

I invite you to explore our website for valuable health information and to find out more about the exciting work of NCHADS researchers and program officers at the community level. For the general public and health professionals, we offer consumer-oriented information on a wide range of topics important to HIV infected and their families as well as a description of our research program. Scientists will find detailed information on areas of research and surveillance program.

We thank you for your interest in our website.

Dr. Mean Chhi Vun
Director, NCHADS
